Announces Third Quarter 2017 Operating Highlights
New York, NY – The Federal Home Loan Bank of New York (FHLBNY) today released its unaudited financial highlights for the quarter ended September 30, 2017.
“Through the first nine months of the year, our members took full advantage of the daily access to our liquidity to help meet their funding needs and achieve their asset liability management goals,” said José R. González, president and CEO of the FHLBNY. “As trusted local institutions, our members provide the loans and services that allow their customers to buy homes and grow businesses, and that help communities thrive. Our proven dependability positions the FHLBNY as a reliable partner for these local lenders, and we are proud to support their efforts across our District and beyond.”
Highlights from the third quarter of 2017 include:
Net income for the quarter was $133.7 million, an increase of $30.4 million, or 29.4 percent, from net income of $103.3 million for the third quarter of 2016. This increase was driven primarily by larger asset balances, higher market interest rates and favorable funding conditions. Return on average equity (ROE) for the quarter was 6.84 percent (annualized), compared to ROE of 6.02 percent for the third quarter of 2016.
As of September 30, 2017, total assets were $148.3 billion, an increase of $4.7 billion, or 3.3 percent, from total assets of $143.6 billion at December 31, 2016. This increase in total assets was driven primarily by higher balances of advances during the period. As of September 30, 2017, advances were $113.1 billion, an increase of $3.8 billion, or 3.5 percent, from $109.3 billion at December 31, 2016.
As of September 30, 2017, total capital was $7.7 billion, an increase of $0.1 billion from total capital of $7.6 billion at December 31, 2016. The FHLBNY’s retained earnings increased during the quarter by $85.8 million to $1.5 billion as of September 30, 2017, of which $1.0 billion was unrestricted retained earnings and $0.5 billion was restricted retained earnings. At September 30, 2017, the FHLBNY met its regulatory capital ratios and liquidity requirements.
The FHLBNY currently expects to file its Form 10-Q for the third quarter of 2017 with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission by November 9, 2017.
